ITHAKA
Make a Lasting Impact
Manager, Institutional Outreach
November 2014 | New York, NY
At ITHAKA, we think nothing is better than knowing you are having a positive impact on the world. We impact the lives of millions of people and thousands of institutions every day both in ground-breaking ways and in small ways
that mean a lot.
About Us
We have a bold mission. We work with leaders in the global higher education community to advance and preserve knowledge and to improve teaching and learning through the use of digital technologies. We are passionate about the value of education and are driven to deploy technologies to make our universities, colleges, and high schools better, more affordable, and more effective. We want to reach beyond these traditional walls to support learners
everywhere.
In two decades, we have launched three of the most transformative and widely used services in higher education: JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R. Our 300+ employees in the United States, Europe, and Asia work closely with our user communities, day-in and day-out, to build and continuously improve upon these services, and to identify new opportunities to expand access to knowledge and learning.
About the Job
As the Manager, Institutional Outreach you will play an essential role in expanding the reach and impact of our JSTOR and Portico services around the globe. In the past 5 years, institutional participation has grown significantly resulting in revenue increases of 43% for JSTOR and 55% for Portico. We are inspired by this, but see significant opportunity to continue to deepen our relationships with institutions already part of our services and to serve many more throughout the world. For us to achieve our mission and continue to positively impact the education and growth of people everywhere, we must ensure our team is focused, coordinated, and inspired to reach our participation and revenue goals.
To achieve this, we need people who excel at driving teams to reach revenue goals each and every day, who bring the right attitude and mindset focused on hiring and developing outstanding talent, and the leadership ability to inspire people to deliver their best work and to relentlessly pursue our mission.
About the Team
You will be managing the engine room of our participation and revenue-generation operation–the internal sales team. These 15 individuals are the heart and soul of our outreach operations and an important reason why so many institutions around the world participate in JSTOR and Portico. Your job will be part mentor, part facilitator, part sales strategist, and part team-builder to this group of talented professionals who care deeply about their work.
About You
Your task is to effectively manage 15 direct reports, to help these individuals understand the importance of individual accountability in a team-based environment, and to help them get better and better each and every day. Most of the team is based in New York City, but a few are scattered remotely and must be led just as actively and effectively.
We have recently implemented a new CRM system (SugarCRM). We need someone who can help us refine and implement workflows in that system in support of the participation and revenue goals of the organization.
We do not need people who can just sell. You will need to balance the revenue needs that support the long-term sustainability of the organization with the important mission(s) that we serve in the scholarly communications ecosystem, bringing this balance to everything you do.
