New York Medical College, located in the historic Hudson Valley, one hour north of NYC, seeks a Senior Environmental Health & Safety Technician, who will play an integral part in both supporting and providing program management for New York Medical College's comprehensive environmental, safety and research compliance programs
Reporting to the Associate Director, the Senior Environmental Health & Safety Technician responsibilities include:
• Conducting laboratory and worksite evaluations, inspections, audits, investigations, and surveys for compliance programs, including assisting with creation/ preparation of checklists for the inspections. Identify potential risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions;
• Drafting lab inspection reports, assessment reports, hazard surveillance reports, lab inspection reports, and standard operating procedures;
• Helping to maintain records and documentation, including training records, waste manifests, MSDSs, safety equipment certifications, and other regulatory compliance documents;
• Actively assisting in the day-to-day management of the College's Biosafety Level 3 laboratory program;
• Overseeing chemical, biological and radiological waste programs;
• Updating/maintenance of chemical inventories and online MSDS system;
• Maintaining/updating laboratory signage/other hazard postings;
• Participating in project management to facilitate laboratory moves and/or renovation projects, including coordination with vendors, contractors and internal clients;
• Responding to and assisting with the mitigation of emergencies and spills involving hazardous materials which may include biological, chemical, or radioactive substances and assisting in the response and investigation of accidents, incidents, or exposures;
• Acting as a American Health Association Heartsaver CPR/AED trainer and maintain training paperwork;
• Maintaining strong collaborative and professional relationships with the EH&S staff, Principal Investigators, researchers and clients while actively promoting a safety culture, and
• Providing emergency response support (24 hour) on a rotating basis;
• Other duties/special projects as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree;
• 2+ years experience
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
• Highly motivated self-starter with an eye for detail and strong follow-through skills;
• Basic knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to Environmental Health & Safety, such as; EPA, DOT, NFPA, OSHA, NIH/CDC, NIOSH, and NYS Sanitary Code;
• Knowledge of laboratory safety preferred;
• Strong communication skills; must be able to communicate technical issues to a diverse clientele;
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills;
• Ability to satisfactorily manage and report status of assignments, tasks, responsibilities, and multiple elements of complex programs;
• Proven ability to leverage critical thinking skills for creative problem solving;
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
• Must be able to wear a respirator and lift 40 lbs.
• Ability to travel to between sites and respond to matters of urgency, sometimes after normal working hours.
