Information Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University (MSU) is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the University hosts an enrollment of over 14,000 students, including approximately 1,900 graduate students. MSU is classified as one of 108 U.S. Research Universities (very high research activity) by the Carnegie Foundation.
This scientist position is located at the Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC) and is a diversified crop and livestock research facility located seven miles southwest of Havre (pop. 10,000). Havre, MT offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, golfing, skiing, and ice skating. Cultural attractions include museums, galleries, concerts, and live theater. Historical attractions nearby include the Montana Dinosaur Trail, Fort Assinniboine, and Buffalo Jump. Havre is a small town with a low crime rate, and is the focal point of commercial activity in the Hi-Line region.
Overview The Department of Research Centers represents a unique organizational unit with faculty and staff that conduct research and outreach programs at seven off-campus research centers throughout Montana. This is a transformational period for the Department with other faculty searches underway in cropping systems and plant pathology at other research centers and discussions underway regarding future positions at other centers.
NARC consists of 3,000 acres at headquarters with an additional 3,960 acres of grazing land located in the nearby Bears Paw Mountains. The NARC completed a $2.1 million upgrade of office/laboratory complex, livestock handling facilities and calving barn. The facilities include finishing/development dry lot and individual animal electronic identification (EID) system. The research center is typical of the environments where much of the cattle production occurs in Montana. Current NARC livestock research objectives include identifying genetic components associated with reproductive efficiency, utilizing nontraditional crops in backgrounding weaned calves, development of supplementation strategies to augment winter adaptive behaviors of range cows and defining the repeatability of residual feed intake measurements using lower quality roughages and high concentrate diets. The NARC cow herd consists of approximately 300 Angus, Angus cross, and 100 line bred Herefords. The current research center staff consists of MAES-funded faculty, research associates, and support personnel, with others supported by external funds. A local advisory board, consisting of area producers and industry representatives, provides guidance on NARC research priorities.
Additional information about MAES, the Department of Research Centers and NARC may be found by accessing MSU's College of Agriculture web page at http://ag.montana.edu/maes.htm. Additional information about the MSU Extension Service may be found at http://www.msuextension.org/
