Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an opening for an Electronics Maintenance Technician at the Advanced Light Source (ALS: http://www.als.lbl.gov/ ) . The electronics technician position supports a variety of electronics and/or computer maintenance and development tasks.
Specific Responsibilities:
Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, component layout diagrams, assembly, maintenance, calibration and operating manuals.
Perform general troubleshooting, repair and calibration of complex electronics or electro-mechanical circuits, mechanisms, store bought and customized equipment, instruments, computers and systems to component level (not simply switching out modules).
Run system, board and component level diagnostic routines on computer systems and peripheral equipment by following general specifications, plan work methods, determine type of tests, select test equipment, and analyze test results to assure performance compliance with technical specifications.
Fabricate and/or install electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation cross-connect / inter-connect cabling systems.
Utilize broad knowledge of high voltage and high current power supplies.
Operate a variety of hand, power and machine tools, including complex electronics or computer test equipment.
Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade.
Assist in the design of general electronics equipment or systems; provide design details where lacking and recommend modifications to engineering designs as required.
Additional Desired Responsibilities:
Provide on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff on matters relating to general troubleshooting, repair and calibration techniques and procedures.
Prepare formal instructional guides for repairing, calibrating and maintaining complex equipment and systems.
Required Qualifications
3+ years education and/or experience including substantial technical understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, or computer theory, scientific principles, and mathematics.
Broad knowledge of high voltage and high current power supplies.
Demonstrated work experience performing general troubleshooting, repair and calibration of complex electronics or computer equipment.
Ability to exercise independent judgment to successfully accomplish assignments.
Knowledge and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures and appropriate hand, and power tools of the trade.
Ability to correctly interpret complex schematics, and assembly, calibration, maintenance and operating manuals.
General knowledge of equipment design procedures and techniques.
Valid Driver's License with a good driving record.
General electronics drafting and design-documentation skills desired.
General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors desired.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Associates or Bachelors Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Computer Technology or the equivalent in formal military or industrial training.
Physical Requirements:
Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and move/lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs.).

This is a career appointment.
Incumbents in this position are represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on range determined by collective bargaining agreement.
